Pottery Camp

My first time at the Anglian potters Pottery Camp and it was a week!

There was so much you could participate in and I felt truly overwhelmed, but after some great advice from my next-tent-neighbour to not try and do everything I started to slowly get going with a bit of simple glazing for the big wood kiln.

I tried to keep notes, but taking photos was the best way.

There was also a Saggar/Barrel firing, which was great fun to wrap up one of my pots with loads of old bits and pieces, plus the ubiquitous banana skin.

I loved the pinks that came out.

We also had a dragon kiln which was fun to build and fire – very dramatic!

Pots from the Dragon Kiln, apparently it didn’t quite get to the right temperature, so the colours and pots weren’t quite right, but they were pretty.

Wood firing

I got to help with the experimental kiln and control the firing… but at one point we may have put too much wood on! (yes, that is 1344 degrees Celsius)

I managed to get a couple of pots into the Raku Kiln and thoroughly enjoyed being in charge of my own firing, what an experience!

The one thing I really wanted to try from the moment I saw it was throwing on the Leach Wheel in the throwing tent.

This was a true moment of calm for me in what was a really hectic busy few days, but I absolutely loved it.

My first pottery camp was truly mind-blowing and it totally mentally exhausted me, but it was also brilliant. This was just the reason I joined the Anglian Potters to have experiences with other potters and learn and try lots of different things. If you are thinking of joining them – do it!
