    New York Inspired

After watching the Great Pottery throwdown first week challenge, I tried to think about what would I make if asked to create a set based on a fond memory. I thought back to a visit to New York before Covid hit in 2019 and a couple of photos that I…

    My first craft fair

I had managed to book a stall at Cinema City’s very first craft sale for Christmas, and it fitted perfectly timing wise for me to have a go at selling all of the ceramics that I have created over the last 12 months. Although the table was really small I…

    Fabricate – A technicians showcase

I’ve always made and experimented on my own alongside my day-to-day role and feel that as technicians at an Arts University a lot of the students and our academic colleagues, may not know our own creative practice outside of work hours. So when I spoke up about technicians being artists…

Thought I’d play with another new clay today, the Sibelco white throwing clay, it’s not cheap so I’ve only got a tester lump of 2.5kg. Going to hopefully put these through my Raku process. The first 3 shapes were my favourites to throw and how they turned out, so I can compare these with my normal clay. And wanted to try a large sphere shape with a whole kilo, which I don’t throw that size very often… It’s buttery soft to throw with, but very easy (for me) to overstretch it when pulling those walls. See pot number 3 for the fail 🙀 . #wheelthrown #potterythrowdown #sibelco #playwithclay Project 2! I’ve always enjoyed my very flat illustrative style and really wanted to try and incorporate it into my pottery somehow, so starting small with this fairly simple Border Collie picture and testing out a process on tiles to see if it’s something I could put onto a pot. I think Raku could really suit a black and white finish for these so more tests on the way! ☺️#pottery #playwithclay I’ve been working on lots of different projects recently, you thought I’d been quiet didn’t you! 🙀 This one has been bubbling in the back of my mind for a long time, using a lovely old style handled half pint glass and turning it into a glorious glazed mug. Even though I bought plaster just for this project I have a feeling it was old as it took weeks to be dry enough to try and cast with it. I’ve even popped it into the oven a couple of times! But it has been mostly successful. #wheelthrown #pottery #slipcast #test #playwithclay Lovely bit of throwing today, gave myself time to enjoy the process and put some cool tunes on. But oh boy was it cold! Heater on, hot water bottle on, and using hot water to throw with and my hands were still frozen, but a lot of fun was had. These shapes are pretty tricky and my clay was probably a bit too soft… but I like a challenge 😁 #wheelthrown #pottery #playwithclay Here are my starting drawings for the mugs I recently threw. Then the handles got pulled a couple of days ago. Today was tidying them up for the last time before popping them back into a box to homogenise the wetter and drier clay. I want some of these to be pink and some to be green, does pink and green work together🤣 not sure about that, but might try a test tile… #pottery #mugs #pink #wheelthrown A little bit of throwing shapes, just like the old days. 🤪 These forms are slight adaptations from earlier cups that I personally really like to hold and use, just a more curved base shape. They’re feeling mighty thin, so hope I will be able to attach some lovely pulled handles! #pottery #wheelthrown #pulledhandles #ceramics
